Advertising
How do I set up my account for advertising?
When you register an account you will be asked whether you want to setup a Pay as you go account or if you would like to setup an Advertiser supported account. If you choose an Advertiser supported account you will have access to extra options to allow you to deliver BeamAds to your Beams to cover the cost of the SMS and add margin to earn revenue.
How does the ad system work?
BeamAds is our advertising system which allows advertisers to set up text message adverts to attach to the bottom of your Beams. These BeamAds can be targeted to our pre-defined Network Categories or directly to user defined Placements on your website.
What does a BeamAd look like and where does it appear?
A BeamAd consists of 130 characters that is attached to the bottom of your Beam. If you are in a country that does not support concatenated or multiple SMS messages your BeamAd will be sent as a separate SMS. It is made up of a head line (25 chars) in all caps, body (70 chars) and an optional URL (35 chars) which can be live depending on the capabilities of the handset. If the Advertiser elects not to use a URL the extra 35 characters can be reassigned to the body for another type of call to action. Here is an example:
SYDNEY COSTUME HIRE
Snog the Frog. Closest to the CBD.

What is a pre-defined Network Category?
These are a list of 20 common advertising categories that we have identified as primary targets for Advertisers. Through the Beam Code Generator you can assign one or more categories to your Beam code using the 'Ad Category' drop down. What this does is randomly select a BeamAd from the pool of Advertisers who have targeted this category. You cannot vet any Advertisers from the pool, if you need to control who advertises on your Beams you should use Placements.
Can I see the network ads that are being displayed on my Beams?
No. If you choose to take network Advertisers the adverts will be delivered directly to your Beams. You will not be able to vet adverts being delivered from Network Categories.
What is a Placement?
A Placement is basically a category you define and control. You can apply this Placement to one or more websites effectively creating your own ad network. It can be a whole website or sections of a website allowing you to create valuable targeted inventory for potential Advertisers.
How do I create a Placement?
Placements are created in your account under 'Ad Publishing'. From there select 'My Placements' from the sub-menu. This will display the Placements control panel. Click on the 'New Placement' button. From here you can give your Placement a name and select from the following options.
First you can select 'Placement Display' options.
Public Display
When setting your Placement to be public you are allowing any Advertiser to see your domain and/or custom Placements. From the Advertiser side they search for a domain and if found on a public search they will be able to send submissions directly to that domain. You will be able to vet the ads if you choose by setting auto approve to 'off' in your account 'Overview'.
Private Display
By setting your Placement to private the only way an Advertiser can send submissions is by you sending them an invitation. Your domain and Placements will not be found in the public search. You can set your adverts to 'auto approve' through your account 'Overview'. This means that when an Advertiser submits an advert it will become live immediately
Secondly you can select 'Placement Type' options
Custom Placement
A Custom Placement is an ID number that allows a number of Beams to be categorised by you then targeted directly by an Advertiser. This Placement ID is stored in the Beam code and any Advertiser that targets your Placement from BeamAds will have their ads shown. When you save your Placement you will see the ID number next to its name in the control panel. You can change the name of the Placement at any time but it will still behave the same way, the ID number will always be the same.
Domain Placement
By selecting a 'Domain Placement' you are effectively creating a space on every Beam that is being delivered from your site for an advert. This is the simplest way to quickly get ads up and running. If you have a large site with lots of Beams, you may want to create a series of Custom Placements so that your Advertisers can target their audience more effectively.
Once you have named your Placement and selected from the options click the 'Save' button. You will be returned to the Placement Control Panel where you will see it displayed.
Can I edit a Placement after its been created?
You can edit the name and the visibility by clicking on the item from the control panel, click on the 'Edit' button make your changes click 'Save'. You cannot change the Placement ID or domain.
Can I delete a Placement?
Yes, select the Placement and click the 'Delete' button, all adverts that were being targeted to this domain or custom Placement will be stopped without warning to the Advertiser.
How do Advertisers find my Placements?
There are two ways for Advertisers to put ads on your Placements:
1. By searching for your domains from the BeamAds system
If you have the visibility of your Placements set to public, Advertisers using the BeamAds system can search for your domain. When they find it, the domain name and any Placements will be displayed for targeting. They will enter a bid for the Placement in the form of a submission which you may accept or reject.
2. By your invitation
Select the 'My Advertisers' link from the 'Ad Publishing' sub-menu. Here you will see the Ad Control panel. From here you can monitor all of the advertising activity that is happening on your Placements. From here you can invite an Advertiser to your account. Click the 'Invite Advertiser' button on top of the panel. You will be presented with a panel with four tabs. Each of these contains the options required to create an invitation.
Advertiser Tab
Here you can either enter the email address of the person you would like to invite, or you can select a previous Advertiser from the drop-down menu. If you select a previous Advertiser, the invitation will appear directly in their system and they will see it next time they log-in. If you enter an email address a link to the invitation will be sent via email.
Placements Tab
Here you will choose the domain or custom Placements that you would like to invite the Advertiser to. Select one or many and click the arrows to add them. You can also double-click on your selections to add them. If you do not see any Placements you will need to set some up in order to send an Advertiser an invitation. For an advert to show you need to make sure that the Placement ID has been inserted into the Beam code that the Advertiser wants to advertise on.
Terms Tab
1. Advertiser will pay themselves
You enter a cost per send (CPS) that you would like the Advertiser to pay. You should charge an amount that is above your individual SMS cost multiplied by your average Beam length including advert in number of SMS. beg. SMS cost is 10c multiplied by your average Beam length of 2 SMS + 1 SMS advert. 10x3 = 30c. Your break even is 30c so your should charge more than that to make a profit. The Advertisers using the BeamAds system have their credit card details on file, at the end of each month we charge them directly for the total cost of the sends minus our SMS costs and then pay you the difference at the end of each month via Paypal.
2. I'll pay on behalf of the Advertiser
You use your own systems. You pay for the SMS costs with your credit card and you can invoice the Advertiser directly. This is handy for clients with pre-defined budgets.
Review Tab
From here you can review your invitation and send it directly to the Advertiser, once you send it you will be returned to the "Ad Control" panel where you will see the invitation marked as sent. At this point an Advertiser may accept or reject your invitation. If they reject it you will see the status set to rejected. Once an invitation is rejected it can be reviewed but not resent, if you would like to invite the Advertiser again at a different price you must create a new invitation.
Can I approve ads that are being displayed on my Placements?
Yes, any submission that has been created by an Advertiser targeted at a Placement will appear as an item in your Ad Control panel. From here you can 'Accept' or 'Reject' the advert.
Can I auto-approve ad submissions?
Yes, however auto-approve is an account level setting. If selected, all BeamAds on all Placements will be live as soon as the Advertiser submits it.
